My Favorite Photographer Best 2
みなさんこんにちは。FRAME TOKYOのTAKESHIです。最近は状況が状況なだけに、家で過ごされている方も多いかと思います。そんな時間を有意義に過ごすべく、手持ちの写真集を見返してみてはどうでしょうか？撮ることから離れて客観的に写真と向き合う時間も自身の役に立つと思います。今回は、改めて写真集を見返す中で、「やっぱり好きだな。」と改めて思った写真家・写真集を紹介しようと思います。
Hello everyone, I am TAKESHI. I hope everyone is doing well and I guess many people still need to stay at home because of COVID. It seems that it is difficult to go outside to do something compared with before pandemic, but why do not you use this time to observe inspiration form phonebooks instead of shooting? I think it is also good to take back form taking photos and look at photos objectively. For this time, I would like to share 2 best photographers I love.
Peter Lindbergh “ON STREET”
一人目は、言わずと知れたファッションフォトグラファー、巨匠ピーター・リンドバーグ氏です。数々のスーパーモデルを撮影した写真は、「ヴォーグ」や「ハーパース・バザー」などのファッション誌に掲載。ナチュラル姿をリッチなモノクロームの階調で表現された、その時代を代表する数々のファッションフォトを生み出しました。写真集はいくつもありますが、僕は”ON STREET”という写真集が気に入っています。この写真集には、彼がスーパーモデルを実際にニューヨークの街中を歩かせてそれをストリートフォト的に撮影した写真がたくさん掲載されています。
僕が驚いたのは、ファッションフォトとストリートフォトが両立されていた点です。モデルや服が悪目立ちせず、一人の女性としてのストーリー性とその女性が自身の一部として身に纏うファッションがキャラクターとして写し出されていました。ピーター・リンドバーグの写真ならではの豊潤なモノクロームの美しい階調とリアルさとストーリー性が組み合わされた、僕にとって最高の写真集です。そのバランスは、僕にとってまさに黄金比です。
僕が、“ファッション・トレンド”を“時代の記号”と捉えて、それを身に纏った人々を“ストーリー性ある写真”として撮ることで、“時代をドキュメントする”というライフワークを始めるキッカケとなった写真集でもあります。この写真集をよく見ていくと、写真にストーリー性を持たせる構図のヒントが散りばめられており、大変参考になりました。この写真集に限らず多くの彼の写真には、その要素が共通項として入り込んでいます。写真集は写真家の写真をまとめて見ることができるので、そういった写真家の意図が見えてくることも写真集の面白さの一つだと思います。
First, I would like to introduce Peter Lindbergh, who was a really famous fashion photographer.
He has photographed numerous supermodels in fashion magazines such as "Vogue" and "Harper's Bazaar," and he expressed the natural appearance of the model in soft monochrome gradations. He created a number of fashion photographs that represent 20 century.
There are many photo books of him, but I love the photo book "ON STREET". This photobook is composed with photos captured the supermodel who walk on the street by Lindbergh's intention naturaly, and I feel sence of street snap from photos in the book even though situations the supermodel walks on the street were set.
What I am always amazed for the book is that I can feel senses of fashion photography and street snap simultaneously. When I look at the model on the book, I do not feel that the model is not exaggerated like models on runway shows, and the model is really in the moment naturally.
I am always impressed that the book seems to focus on capturing and describing the story of the model and the fashion that she wears as a part of herself.
I think it's the best photo book for me, combining the beautiful gradation of rich monochrome, which is one of Peter Lindbergh's uniqueness on his photographs, and the senses of realism and story. That balance is exactly the golden ratio for me.
This book is an important book because I could start thinking that fashion trend was a key element of an era, and also I could start a new lifework to document people who put on fashion trend in nowadays as documenting time when I live.
If I take a closer look at this photo book, you will find lots of hints on the composition that gives the photos a story, which was very helpful for me. Many of his photographs, not just this photobook, have that element in common. Since you can see all the photographers' photos in the photobook, I think one of the interesting things about the photobook is that you can see the intentions of those photographers.
Garry Winogrand “GARRY WINOGRAND”
二人目は、20世紀半ばを代表するアメリカの写真家、ゲイリー・ウィノグランド氏です。
写真集“GARRY WINOGRAND”は、2013年に大回顧展がサンフランシスコ近代美術館で開催された際に刊行された写真集です。56歳の若さで他界してしまったウィノグランドですが、未現像のフィルムや未編集のコンタクトシートから抜粋した写真も掲載されており、僕が最も好きな彼の作品が掲載されている唯一の写真集です。
彼の写真には、躍動感やリズム、視点のユニークさがあり、それでいてスタイリッシュ。その時代の他の写真家にはないスタイリッシュでモダンな感覚を感じて僕は一気に彼の写真が好きになりました。いくつかある彼の写真集もそれぞれコンセプチャルで他の写真家とは違うと感じました。とにかく広角レンズを使ったフレーミングや構図が秀逸で、僕のフレームングや構図の考え方に大きな影響を与えています。
傾いた水平線とパースから生まれるダイナミズムやよく見ると計算された各要素の関係性を含んだ構図。それらがスタイリッシュにまとめあげられた写真には、惚れます（w）広角を使いながらも寄りすぎず、背景を上手く利用するフレーミングは、ダイナミズムと背景を被写体のバックストーリーを示す要素として機能させる手法として、僕にとってとても参考になりました。動物園で撮影された写真の写真集”Animals“も視点や構図がユニークでオススメです。
Secondly, I would like to share Garry Winogrand, an American photographer representing the mid-20th century. My favorite photo book "GARRY WINOGRAND" is a photo book published when a large retrospective exhibition was held at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2013. Unfortunately, he died at the young age of 56, but there are also photos taken from undeveloped films and unedited contact sheets, and This is the only photo book that includes my favorite works of him.
His photographs are stylish with a sense of dynamism, rhythm and unique perspective.
I felt a stylish and modern feeling that other photographers of that era did not have were on his photos, and I fell in love with his photography at once. I also felt that some of his photo books were conceptual and different from other photographers. Anyway, the framing and composition using a wide-angle lens are excellent, and it has a great influence on my way of thinking about framing and composition.
The dynamism that comes from the slanted horizon and perspective, and the composition that includes the relationships between the calculated photographic elements I can find when I look closely ... etc. I'm always fascinated by the his stylishly organized photos.
His flaming technique that is made with use of wide-angle lens and details of background helped me a lot to improve my photographic knowledge of how I could use his flaming technique to show a subject's story.
The photo book "Animals," that is composed with photographs taken at the zoo, is also my favorite one because I also can see unique perspective and composition on the book.

以上が僕の好きな写真家BEST2でした。写真集は色々持っていますが、一番見る頻度が高いのもこの2人の写真集ですね。他の写真家の作品を見ることは、新しい発見や気付きにも繋がるのでオススメです。家にいる時間が多くなる今だからこそ、いろいろなことをインプットしておくのも良いと思います。

I shared 2 most favorite photographers for this time, and I feel I usually look at both Peter Lindbergh and Garry Winogrands photo books even though I have lots of photo books. I really love observing photo books because I feel I can build my photo skills and knowledge through analyzing photographers hidden intentions, elements and concepts. Therefore, I highly recommend you to look at carefully and slowly your favorite photo books. Also it is good to look at different photographers photo book to get new inspiration and discoveries. I think now when we mostly need to to stay at home is a really good time to get inspiration, so let's do that!
