This photograph was captured during my first journey to Japan in April 2024. In search of inspiration prior to my visit, I delved into various books, haiku, and essays that explored the role and importance of women in Japanese culture, both historically and in contemporary times. As I wandered the streets, I aimed to capture images—portraits, gestures, body language, and facial expressions that would reflect the themes from my readings. This particular image was taken in the Tokyo subway and portrays a young woman who is confident and self-reliant.

Anna Jelowicka, based in Poland, wife of an aikidoka, passionate about art. Learned photography at Tomasz Tomaszewski Academy, studied history of art at Polish Science Academy. After leaving corporate world, she started a new life and is now focused on photography, ceramics, playing congas and handpan in a drum band Viva el Cajon!
