Let's Print Photos

先日ちょっとびっくりした出来事がありました。
日本最古の総合カメラ雑誌として知られる「アサヒカメラ」が２０２０年６月号で休刊してしまいました。「アサヒカメラ」はストリートスナップがあまり認知されていない日本で、その素晴らしさを伝えようと毎年特集を組んでいたので思い入れのある雑誌でした。
「スナップは怖くない」「スナップは人生だ」というチャッチフレーズでストリートスナップのHowToを紹介していた数少ないカメラ雑誌でもありました。
毎月読者応募による月例コンテストも実施していました。嫌らしい話ですが、賞金が他のカメラ雑誌より格段に高額・・・その分応募される作品も多数でハイレベルでした。実は僕も数回応募して一度だけ紙面掲載されたことがあります。↓写真でタイトルは「finale」です。
ちなみにこのコンペは全てプリント応募によるものでした。

Recently there was a little shocking happening. Asahi Camera Magazine, which is said as one the oldest Japanese camera magazine, suspended publication from June.
Asahi Camera was significant for me because Asahi Camera was always trying to spread how street photography is great and interesting media to japan, where is not still familiar with the tradition of street photography. There were some interesting special editions, such as, " Shooting snap is not scaring, " " Life is Snap," and Asahi Camera was very popular camera magazine that street photographers can learn how to shoot snaps.
There were also some photo competitions that open Asahi Camera, and I felt the level of all of applicants were so high because of big prize. Actually, I have been selected and my photo have been published on the magazine once. ( The photo below ) The title is,
" Finale" That competition was required to print to submit.
今日では写真を閲覧するツールはパソコンやスマートフォンが主流かと思います。
僕自身も暇さえあればインスタグラムで色んな写真を閲覧して楽しんでおります。
ただ本当に見たい写真はプリントアウトして展示されたものを鑑賞したいと思っています。その方が写真から伝わってくるパワーというかメッセージみたいなものを感じることが出来るとも思っています。
さて、前置きはここら辺にして本題です。撮影は梅雨の中休みということで、今回は最近撮った写真をプリントしていきたいと思います。そしてプリントした写真はしっかり額装して自分の部屋に飾りたいと思います！
(注) HowToではないのでプリントの技術的な説明は書いておりません。
まずは用紙の選定ですが、カラーでプリントするので光沢用紙を使おうと思います。
FUJIFILM社の高光沢用紙画彩（がっさい）です。コスパがとてもよくサイズの種類も豊富です。光沢用紙を使用するならこれはおススメです。
まず小さいL版でテストプリントします。いきなりA4サイズでプリントすると失敗したときのリスクが大きいからです。L版は紙代1枚10円ですが、A4は1枚100円です。
パソコンの画面で見ている色と、プリンターから出力される色は若干違います。まずL版で出力して色合いや露出が適正か確認してからA4でプリントアウトします。
上手く一発で焼く方法もありますが、それなりのスキルと設備が必要なので詳しく知りたい人は自分で調べてみてください・・・
今年に入ってから撮影した写真でお気に入りのものをどんどんプリントしていきます！
Nowadays, we mostly use PC or smartphone to watch photos through SNS.
Even I enjoy finding many different types of interesting photos by Instagram in my free time. I think it is really great thing, however I also think that I want to watch a printed and framed photos what I really look at. Because I believe printed photos have much more power or soul of photographer than photos on SNS.
Now I am going to write about main theme of this article. Because it is rainy season and seems to be a good break time to shoot. Therefore, I am going to print my recent works and put photos into picture frames.
* This article is not about how to print photos. I am not going to write about technical things.
First is selecting printing paper, and I am going to use glossy papers because I am going to print by color. The paper what I am going to use is Fujifilm glossy printing paper called, " Gassai." it is nice cost saver and there are so many different size of papers, so I recommend to get that.
I am going to print by small size which is 89 × 127 mm because if I print bigger size from the beginning, it going to be very risky. 89 × 127 mm size is ¥ 10 ( 10 cent ) and A4 is
¥ 100 ( $1)
The color of printed photos is going to be different compared with the photo on the screen, so I recommend to first test printing by smaller size, then after make sure the color balance or exposure, it is going to be a good time to print by bigger size. You could print without test printing, but you would need many knowledge and experience to get perfect print at once. I am going to print my recent photos that I have taken from the begging of 2020!
実際に紙に出力するとパソコンやスマフォで見ているイメージとは違う風に見えてきます。
個人的な主観ですが、良いと思える写真はプリントして大きいサイズにすればするほど良さが表に出てきます。逆に大したことない写真は大きくすればするほど粗が目立ちます。
こうやって並べてみると、ストリートスナップは複数枚で組んだ時の方が街の雰囲気がより伝わりますね。そして、記録としての効果もより高まってくると思います。
左上は今年1月に行ったパリで誰もマスクしてません。方や、左下は2月の池袋でみんなマスクしてますね笑。右上は色が印象的だった写真群です。
さて、この中から額装する写真を2枚選ぼうと思います。
2枚なので組み写真としての要素よりも単写真としての要素を重視して選ぶことにしました。そしてA4サイズでプリントします。
If you print on paper, you will realize that you can feel your photo differently when you see printed photo directly or through PC and Smartphone.
It is my subjective, but I feel much nicer if I print good photo bigger size. Oppositely, bad photo looks so bad when I print it bigger.
If I line up photos like this, I can recognize that I can sense city's atmosphere through a set of photos. Also if I print photos, the element of the record is further emphasized rather than keeping digital files.
The photos on the upper left side are that I have taken in Paris this January, 2020. We can see there are people with no masks. The photos on the lower left side are that I have taken in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan on this February. People are wearing masks and it is very interesting to see the difference. The photos on upper right side are photos with good colors.
Now, I am going to choose two photos to put into picture frames.
I am going to pick up two photos as individual photos rather than set of photos, and
I chose A4 size to print.
やはりA4でプリントすると迫力ありますね。結局のところ、このブログを読んで下さっている皆さんもスマートフォン・PC越しなので「So what?」って感じかもしれませんが、実物はとても綺麗で迫力がありデータだった頃より愛着がわきました。
しかし、最後に失敗しました。家の壁に額を掛けることが出来なかったという事です・・・
Printing by A4 looks good and powerful. I think all of you who are reading this article see my photos through PC or smartphone, so you feel like, " so what ? " However, the actual printed photo is very beautiful and powerful.
Until printing photos was good, but I realized I cannot put my photos on the wall.
最後にまとめです。今回半年ぶりにプリントして思う事がありました。
➀自分の写真を見直すいい機会になる
複数枚出力して実際に組んでみることで、自分の作品の傾向や構成を考えることが出来ました。パソコンの画面で考えるより具体的なイメージを掴むことが出来ると思います。
➁写真の完成度を上げる事が出来る
普段は撮影→現像→インスタ投稿で終わってしまう流れです。あとはたくさんLikeが付けば嬉しいし、Featuringされれば尚良しです。要は作品の良し悪しはそれで決められてしまいます。しかし、最後のアプトプットをプリントにすることで、いつでも自分の作品を直に見直すことが出来ます。表面だけの評価に捉われず、本当に自分がいいと思える写真を突き詰める事に役立つと思います。
③自分の写真を好きになれる！←これが一番大事！
なんででしょう？こうやってプリントしてると自分の写真に愛着がわいてきます。めっちゃ綺麗！俺上手いんじゃね？なんて妄想に浸ってしまいますね。
というわけで、今回は梅雨であまり撮影に行けないのでお家プリントをやってみました。

Conclusion, I found many new things through printing my recent works for the first time in 6 months.
➀ It is going to be a good opportunity to look back own photos
I could get much clear sense, ideas and thought of my photography through printing photos and lining up them as a set photo. I think it is much better than just think or imagine about what I really capture while watching photos on PC or Smartphone.
➁ It is going to be so helpful to develop your sense of street photography
We usually just continue the routine, such as shooting, developing photos and post on Instagram. It is totally good if you get likes and comments as many as possible and much nicer if your photos are featured by some photo constitutions or collectives. However, if you print your photos, you could directly look back your photo and think about your feeling and sense when you have taken those photos.
This process is going to be helpful for seeking what is good photo for you without caring superficial evaluation, such as likes and comments.
③ You are going to love more your photo ! ( It is the most important thing ! )
I am not sure but if I print my works, they look so cool and nicer than looking at them in the screen. When I print my works and see them, I feel like I became a good photographer or have a good sense of street photography.
So this time I printed my works in my house because of rainy season and do not go outside to shoot. I strongly recommend to print your favorite photos what you really like and it will be a nice opportunity to look back your works.
