Is Leica Really Good?
僕のメインカメラは、Leica M-E。
Photo walkイベントなどで人に会うと必ず聞かれる質問です。
今回は、その質問について答えていこうと思います。
I mainly use Leica M-E.
And there is always one question that people ask me every time I go to a photo walk or event - and that is, “Is Leica really good?”
I will answer the question today.
Leicaを使う理由は、画質じゃない。
It’s not the resolution, but the functionality
そうなんです。「Leicaで撮れる画ってさ‥」って話を期待された方、すみません！でもライカ画質については、レンズの話も含めいろいろ書き尽くされていると思うので検索してみてください。話を戻します。僕がライカを使う一番の理由は「操作性」です。
今までいろいろなカメラを使ってきました。

ざっとこんな感じで、ミラーレス、一眼レフ、コンパクとカメラ、レンジファインダーと一通り各カテゴリー使ってました。最初は建設物をとっていたのですが、今はストリートフォトグラフィーをやっているので、その変化に合わせてカメラも変わっていったんだなぁと今書いて気づきました。撮りやすい方へ流れてる。つまりそういうことなんです。
And right, it is the functionality.
To explain this, here is the list of camera I’ve been using;

And I was taking photos of architecture first, but gradually shifted to street photography-meaning that Leica has good functionality.
操作性こそがLeicaを選ぶ理由。
その操作性は換えが効かない。
And its functionality is one and only
ストリートでの撮影は、瞬間が命。ある場所で待つにせよ、街中を歩き回るにせよ、撮りたい瞬間は突然訪れるのです。「あっ！」と思ったときにシャッターが押し終わっている。これが僕にとっての理想。それが可能なカメラが僕にとってはLeicaだった。
何故可能か？その理由は、
撮影中に液晶画面を見る必要がない。
マニュアルフォーカスである。
両目を使ってファインダー内とファインダー外をほぼ同時認識できる。
カメラを構えたままその指先で全ての操作が可能。
電子制御の部分がないので、タイムラグがない。
My ideal camera is the one which let me take photos at the very moments I feel it - and Leica makes it possible. Here are why;
You do not need to see the screen while shooting
It is a manual-focus camera
It is possible to check inside and outside the finder at the same time
You can operate all the function when holding Leica
It is alll analog, so there is no time-lag
1.撮影中に液晶画面を見る必要がない。
設定で必要なシャッタースピードダイヤル、絞りリングには数値が書かれているので、カメラを持っている状態で見えています。その場その場の状況で設定を歩きながらいじれるので、シャッターを切るときには、すでに適切な設定になっている状態なのです。
1.You do not need to see the screen while shooting
Shutter-speed and aperture is visible when holding the camera, meaning it is all set when you want to press the shutter!
2.マニュアルフォーカスである。
M型ライカはマニュアルオンリー。この潔さと1.の組み合わせがライカの撮影体験をオンリーワンにしていると勝手に思っています。昼間は基本的にゾーンフォーカスなので、シャッターを切るだけ。なので「あっ！カシャ！」が実現します。
2.It is a manual-focus camera
Leica-Ms are only manual-focus, and this feature combined with the point I mentioned previously at 1, makes it possible to shoot at the very moment you want!!
3.両目を使ってファインダー内とファインダー外をほぼ同時認識できる。
これは利き目がどっちかによるのですが、僕と同じように利き目が右目なら可能です。
カメラのファインダーに右目を当てると左目がカメラの外側になります。両目を開ければカメラを構えたまま外の世界とファインダーの世界を確認できます。フレーム内に人が入ってきて欲しい時、タイミングを測るのに便利です。
3.Possible to check inside and outside the finder at the same time
If you use your right eye for the finder, your left eye gets the full view so you can check inside and outside the finder at once. It is very useful when you want somebody within the frame.
4.カメラを構えたままその指先で全ての操作が可能。
1.にも書きましたが、撮影に必要な機能がカメラの外側にあります。絞りリングはレンズに。シャッタースピードダイヤルはボディに。カメラを構えるとレンズに添えた指を動かせば絞りを変えることができ、シャッターボタンに添えた指を少し左へずらせばシャッタースピードダイヤルを操作できます。
4.Can operate all the function when shooting
All the necessary functions for shooting are operable when holding the camera- aperture is on the lens and shutter speed is on the body.
5.電子制御の部分がないので、タイムラグがない。
ライカはデジタルカメラであっても撮影の構図を決めてシャッターを切るプロセスはアナログと一緒です。その過程にカメラは関与しません。なので自分で決めた設定で、自分のタイミングで撮影できます。一応絞り優先モード（シャッタースピードはカメラ任せ）がありますが使いません。
5.All analog, thus no time-lag
Although it is the digital camera, the process of deciding the composition and pressing the shutter is all the same with analog camera, so you can take photos with the setting you set, at the very moment you want to take photos. I do not use the the aperture-priority mode.
まとめ：ストリートフォトするならLeicaでしょ。
Leica is the best for the street photography
今回よく聞かれる質問に対して細かく答えてみました。いかがでしたでしょうか？
ライカの良さはもちろんレンズもありますが、綺麗に撮れるカメラ（レンズ）は他にもたくさんあります。しかしレスポンス良く、ダイレクトに撮れるカメラはなかなか無いと思います。撮影スタイルや何を撮影するかで、選ぶカメラも違うと思います。もし、ストリートフォトをするなら、Leicaが良いと僕は思います。高いですけど、その価値はあると思います。
Of course lens is one of the advantages of Leica, but there exist so many cameras which take good photos. However, there are not so many cameras which have good responses and operability as Leica does. If you take photos on the street, I definitely recommend Leica. Indeed it is expensive, however definitely worth it.
